The Russian’s nuclear—powered
battlecruiser is now currently undergoing an extensive renovation and a rearmament,
which will hit water in the year 2018 as the Russia's most powerful warship, the
Northern Design Bureau chief Spiridopulo was quoted by state—run TASS news
agency saying.
In the past, the ship went in service
in the year 1988, but has been mothballed at Sevmash Shipyards Severodvinsk
since 1999. After years of delays, work on restoration the work began in
January of this year.
"A complete overhaul of the warship,
to make it almost new, but everything else, except for the hull and the nuclear
power plant will be new," Spiridupulo said, the refurbishment will
allow Nakhimov to serve another 30 to 40 years.
Admiral Nakhimov one of two
surviving vessels of Soviet-era Kirov class a nuclear-powered battle cruisers
that are the largest surface warships in the world, other than aircraft
carriers. Only Kirov to see constant service since the construction has been done
on Pyotr Veliky, the flagship of the Russian navy. The said Kirov—class battle cruisers
used to destroy large enemy surface vessels, such as aircraft carriers.
