Ph S—76 Sikorsky was an American
medium—sized commercial utility chopper that was manufactured by SAC (Sikorsky
Aircraft Corporation). S—76 features a twin turbo shaft engines, with four—bladed
main and tail rotors and a retractable landing gear.
The development of S—76 began in mid
1970s as S—74 with the design goal of providing medium chopper for a corporate
transportation and oil drilling industry. S—74 later re—designated to S—76 in
honor of United States Bicentennial.
The Sikorsky's design work on S—70
helicopter (which selected for use by United States Army as UH—60 Black Hawk)
was then utilized in development of S—76, incorporating the S—70 design
technology in its rotor blades and rotor heads. It was then the first Sikorsky
helicopter designed purely for commercial rather than military use.
Prototype versions first flew on
1977. United States Federal Aviation Administration type certification was
granted on 1978, the first customer delivery on 1979. The S—76 was named "Spirit"
in 1978 but this name was officially dropped by the company on 1980 due to the translation
issues into some foreign languages.
