The Pro-democracy activist called
off its planned talks with government on political reforms after mobs tried to
drive them away from streets where they have held weeklong its large peaceful
demonstration.
Protesters urged other residents
to join their cause and demanded that police protect their encampments. Hong
Kong Federation of Students, one of the groups that was leading the
demonstrations drew tens of thousands of people earlier, said that they saw no
choice but to cancel the scheduled dialogue.
“The government is demanding the
streets be cleared. We call upon all Hong Kong people to immediately come to
protect our positions and fight to the end,” in a statement said by the
group.
They demanded that the government
hold responsible for scuffles, the worst disturbances since police used tear
gas and pepper spray on the protesters when they try to disperse them.
People remained in streets in
Mong Kok, one of Hong Kong’s busiest shopping areas, after clashes.
