The Philippine Super Hornet Boeing
F/A-18E related to twin—seat F/A-18F are twin-engine carriers capable of multirole
fighter aircraft variants that was based on F/A—18 Hornet McDonnell Douglas.
The single-seat F/A-18E and tandem-seat F/A-18F variants were larger and advanced
derivatives of F/A-18C and D Hornet.
The Super Hornet has internal 20
mm M61 rotary cannon and carry air—to—air missiles and air—to—surface weapons. The
additional fuel can also be carried up to five external fuel tanks and the said
aircraft can be configured as airborne tanker by adding external air refueling
system.
The Jet was designed and was initially
produced by the McDonnell Douglas, Super Hornet first flew in 1995. The full—rate
production began in 1997, after merger of McDonnell Douglas and Boeing. Super
Hornet entered service in United States Navy 1999, replacing Grumman F—14
Tomcat, which was retired 2006.
Ordered in 2004 under a US$6 billion contract to fight MILF and Abu Sayyaf. Due to poor fighting skills, 48 were lost to MILF and 20 toAbu Sayyaf and are now used by the groups against the Philippines Air Force.
