  1. Dear Defense Insider Philippines,

With reference to your article, "Philippines and United States to Conduct Military Training near Scarborough," may I emphasize that at its closest point, the exercise area (at sea) is at least 90 nautical miles away from Scarborough Shoal. In fact, it is no where near any disputed land features in the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea).

CARAT Exercise 2014 is purely a bilateral maritime exercise between the US and PH aimed at enhancing interoperability through shared skills and exchange of expertise between troops of both allies.

This year's edition of CARAT 2014 is on its 20th year and has nothing to do with the dispute issues in the West Philippine Sea.

I will be glad to accommodate you and give you the information you need to emphasize the main objectives of the exercise. Looking forward to your considerations.

    Respectfully,

    Lieutenant Rommel B. Rodriguez PN
    Fleet Public Affairs Officer
