The McDonnell Douglas 500
defender light attack utility helicopter was tailored for specific military
role in the Philippine military operation.
The defender is operated with 2
crews, with a total capacity of 4 to 5 passengers. When empty, the weight is about
599 kilograms, 7.01m in length and 2.59m in height that can carry at a maximum weight
of 1,361 kilograms, powered by 250-c20b 1xone Allison 420 hp Turbo shaft at a
maximum speed of 160 mph.
MD 500 Defender has 4 anti-tank
TOW missiles, 2 General Electric 7.62mm M134 mini guns and 4 air to air stinger
missile and 2 rocket pods with seven shot each. It is capable us carrying a
full geared weapon system for attack missions.
Its main function in the military
operation includes personnel transport, military observation and special attack
support.
MD 500 Defender was commissioned on Philippine military service since
1990 to present ,with a total of 25 McDonnell Douglas 500 defender units currently in service.
