Philippine Future Frigate Overview

The Philippine defense plan in acquiring 2 Frigates will mark a new level for the  Philippine defense capabilities on defending own maritime region.

In the past, the frigates were expected to be commission in 2011, but since there was a problem with the bidding and the scheduled delivery, the original schedule has been moved.

The Php18 billion project for the purchase of 2 frigates is on the go yet the official winning bidder was not yet proclaimed by the DND.

Upon award of contract and the project will be completed, the ships will perform offshore patrol for the Philippines. the Frigates has a total parameter of 1,596mm, 2,300 tons empty weight and 170 crews and sailors at a 30 knot maximum speed.

The ship has modern SONARS for immediate warnings. The sensors are “electro optical” that can operate day and night integrated with the ships weapons. It has computer controlled radar tracking 76mm gun, 1x1 secondary gun, 4x50 machine guns, 4 missile launchers with surface to surface capabilities at 50 kilometer range, missile to air defense system up to 6 kilometers.

2x triple launchers of anti submarine torpedoes up to 2km range at 500m minimum depth” it has landing facilities for one helicopter that weight less than 10 tons with 14.3m L by 9.5m w by 4.5m H.

The specs.for the weapon systems the Philippine Navy wanted for the frigate doesn't conform to a standard frigate it lacks air warfare defense capability especially the Surface- to- Air Missile (SAM) which the range is very short and has no alternative back up weapon like Close In Weapon Support (CIWS) and the Anti-Ship Missile too has limited range to provide firepower.These specs.fits only to corvette or offshore patrol vessel which sometimes are at par with frigate with this latest production.

Better have one with limited weapon system than none at all, perhaps the Navy will have that in their next plan for it would be too prohibitive to add those redundant and backup weapon system all at ones... perhaps some existing surface assets can augment for the moment? lets give the DND and Navy the privilege to decide coz' they will be the one in the front line when troubles come to visit you know? Am waiting with fingers crossed that there be results asap! :D
