Top United States defense
official said that Washington was considering whether to put advanced missile
defense system in South Korea, though they continue to insist that no
discussions about politically sensitive THAAD battery are underway.
South Korea’s Ministry of
National Defense Spokesman said that he was aware of the Work comments, but Seoul
hasn’t received any request from United States to deploy THAAD system and isn’t
discussing the said matter with Washington. He would not comment on whether
South Korea supported such a move, though many in South Korea worry that China
would view the system as threat.
Some believe that United States
were pressuring Seoul to take part of a regional missile defense system that
includes Japan. Terminal High—Altitude Area Defense system can shoot down short,
medium and intermediate range ballistic missiles with “hit-to-kill” approach. Interceptors
rely on kinetic energy of the impact to destroy incoming missile.
