Philippines and Beijing’s move to calm down maritime tensions

The Ph- President Aquino said that he and the Chinese counterpart Jinping had this "meeting of minds" during the talks on sidelines of Asia—Pacific Economic and Cooperation summit, which included territorial row that soured relations between South China Sea states.

After President Aquino attended the tree—planting ceremony on outskirts of Beijing, and had his informal talks with Xi for 10 minutes on some issues that were tainting relations between two countries.


The said invite talks were China's initiative of a senior diplomat that request anonymity. It was first time leaders of two countries had met face —face since the year 2011.

A local news agency in Xinhua quoted Xi saying that he hoped two sides would "move in same direction".

Philippines at this moment was on its dispute with China over the parts of sea including Scarborough Shoal, and other areas that believed to be rich in natural gas and fisheries resources.

Previously China seized control of the stated shoal last June of 2012 and prevented Philippine fishermen getting close to the said rocky outcrop that is a rich fishing ground.
