Does Philippine Defense Needs MBTs?

Answer varies depends on your opinion, but for this case if your answer is “No” there is nothing much to talk about we are on the same road.

If you go for “Yes”, let us evaluate some key points.

Generally, one MBTs unit cost around USD2 million as the cheapest. We have to remember the main purpose for MBTs which is to knock down another MBTs. If we talk about fire power support, heavily armored vehicle is not needed.

We can at least use other lighter vehicles in which can be transported by our C-130.

Mostly these MBTs are used directly on forest attacks as clearing operations due to its thick armors. And this MBTs were rarely used now a days, can we afford to buy expensive armored vehicles just be placed on storage? “No

Lastly, can we afford for its operation expense? MBTs are heavily armored tanks, heavy in nature it needs more power to transport and it needs fuels not just any fuels but lots of fuels. Its minimum fuel consumption is rated per minute not per miles in gallon. Every gallon cost lots of money.

What do you think?

  1. We could instead get a heavily armed IFV similar to the BMP-3. The BMP-3 carries 1 100 mm gun, 1 30 mm gun, 3 7.62 mm Machine Guns and 2 Anti-Tank Missiles. It is a tracked, amphibious vehicle so it could go virtually anywhere, giving it greater mobility than most if not all MBTs ...
