Philippine Defense Authority is
on the final stage to its acquisition of surveillance radar from Israel, the radars
from Elta Systems can monitor interference s up to the air space.
The Php2.68 billion project will
be installed in Palawan replacing the old radar to monitor West Philippine Sea.
The old radar will be repositioned to Ilocos Norte Pasuquin Air Station and
Lubang Island Occidental Mindoro.
“New basing facilities will be built
in Palawan even though old radars are to be restored. This acquisition is still a part of the military capability
upgrade even though no incidents were reported in years.” This was the statement
of Defense Undersecretary Batac to reporters.
“350 nautical miles in radius is
the coverage of the radar”, this specification was discussed in its
pre-negotiation. Some remaining Philippine radar systems in Wallace Station San
Fernando were practically unprotected and it has a limited range that is not
fully operational.
