The CIWS (Phalanx Close—In
Weapons System) was designed to be the last line of defense for anti—ship
missiles. It consists of radar—guided 20 mm Gatling gun that is mounted on a
swivel type base that can fire up to 4,500 rounds/minute or 75 rounds/second.
The effective firing range of the
CIWS Gatling Guns is 3.6 km or 2.2 mi. The CIWS can be used to defend against
fast—attack boats and surface threats.
