Japan will organize a seminar for
defense and diplomatic officials from ASAN (Association of Southeast Asian
Nations), with an eye toward expanding a defense related exports to its Asean
members.
The seminar covers key information’s
on national security issues such as maritime security and disaster relief
response. Japan hopes to sell its modern Japanese ships and aircraft and explain
export policy on these defense items. It will also collect input on the type of
defense cooperation these countries are looking for.
This marks as the first exchange
between Japan government and Asean defense professionals since Japan released its
new guidelines on defense transfers of equipments, allowing it to export
weapons and related technology under a certain conditions.
Japan was moving to provide technological
and material support to these countries, such as giving patrol ships to Vietnam
and Philippines. Nations locked in maritime disputes with China are especially
interested in the Japanese defense technology.
Japan already signed agreements
on the defense equipment transfers with United States, United Kingdom and
Australia in the past and now seeks to expand its network to the Asean members.
