C-27J Spartan was developed based
from G.222, which was corporately produced by Italian companies Fiat Aviazione,
Alenia Aeronautica and Aeritalia, this cargo aircraft widely used by Air Force of
Italia.
In the 1995 Alenia Aeronautica
and Lockheed Martin signed an agreement to build up an improved version of G.222,
such improvements that will meet the modern requirements.
The newly developed C-27J made
its flight in 1999. The aircraft has 35 percent increase in the range and 15
percent faster cruise speed than the previous model. Developers claim, that it
is used to transport troops, cargo and performs airdrops and medical
evacuation.
The main advantage of C-27J is its
capability to make extreme maneuvers, what is unusual for this class of
aircraft. In the year 2009 during an Air Power show, which took place in
Australia, this cargo aircraft performed maneuvers, such as barrel loop, roll as
well as low passes with the minimum speed in performing landing configuration
with open ramp. However the culmination of the show was the maneuver, in which the
aircraft held 90° vertical position of the wings for 8 seconds.
The said cargo aircraft is already
in service in Greece, Italy, Bulgaria, Romania, Lithuania, Slovakia and United States.
