China inadvertently revealed the possession
of DF—26C medium—range intercontinental ballistic missile, unofficially known
as "Guam killer," designed to allow China attack United States
military facilities in the Pacific when in potential conflict.
The website stated that DF—26C
missile capable of targeting range of 3,500 kilometers. It is designed based on
DF—21 missile. DF—26C considered a threat to US national security because it is
capable of hitting US military facilities in Guam. Even though China has a
tradition of keeping its weapons very secret, overseas governments and media
outlets are able to discover them through satellite photos or curious Chinese
military enthusiasts taking cell phone photos and posting them on the internet.
United States monitor China's
test of DF—41 ICBM, which carry multiple warheads, with satellites and other
air, land, and sea—based sensors in 2012. People's Liberation Army never
displays DF—41 missiles in public but photos of them have been circulating on
the internet.
China, believed to have 400 or
more nuclear warheads, has few ballistic missiles with the ability to reach continental
countries such as United States. About two thirds of China's warheads are
believed to be in the missile warheads, most of DF—21s and these will be
replaced by DF—26Cs. A potential nuclear strike against Guam in a war between
China and United States over Western Pacific is a distinct possibility.
