12 Chinese poachers start jail term

The Twelve Chinese fishermen who have been found guilty of illegally fishing in the Philippine waters have started its serving time in Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm in Palawan.

As it was posted on its website, Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park said Puerto Princesa City Regional Trial Court Branch 51 found the 12 fishermen guilty of violating the Philippine Republic Act 10067, the Tubbataha Act of 2009, last Aug. 5.

The Chinese captain was then sentenced to 12 years in prison and the other 11 Chinese crewmen were each sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Each of them was ordered to pay the amount of USD100,000 fine for the Philippine government.

The Filipino authorities caught the said Chinese in last April of 2013 after their boat ran aground on Tubbataha Reef. The fishermen found carrying cargo of pangolins, an endangered mammal similar to an anteater.
