The New attack helicopters of the
Philippine Air force that can operate in darkness are now set to arrive this
was said by the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief General Gregorio
Pio Catapang. The said new helicopter units will have a night vision capability
allowing the pilots to target hostile subjects in dark situations.
"We have capable helicopters
arriving for the PAF," General Catapang said while touring in Sulu.
Catapang also said that new helicopters set to arrive this year shows progress
in military's modernization campaign.
Air Force earlier has selected the
eight pilots to man and operate AW-109 Augusta Westland Power helicopters and was
sent to train in Costa di Samarate, Italy. And also the undergoing training were
22 maintenance personnel. AFP Air Force signed contract for 8 AW109 Power light
twin helicopters November of last year.
The Php3.44 billion contract
includes logistics support and the training for aircrew and maintenance
personnel."These aircraft will be used to perform a range of duties including
homeland security, armed reconnaissance and close support,"
Augusta Westland said earlier that the AW109 Power is three—ton class with eight
seat twin engine helicopter, dubbed as most cost effective helicopter in class
for a range of government tasks.
