The Philippine military estimated
around 300 ASG bandits who engaged with the Philippine Scout Rangers in five—hour
exchange of gun battle in Sulu.
The AFP (Armed Forces of the
Philippines) placed a death toll total to 15 – five on government side and 10 on
the Al—Qaeda—linked militants, including the notorious ASG bandit’s sub-leader
Hairullah Asbang, alleged brother—in—law of ASG leader Sahiron.
In an update report 28 soldiers
and 30 ASG bandits were also wounded in the said firefight.
The recent clash was the first
major encounter of military against elusive terrorist group since government
launched a full— scale law enforcement operation after release of the two
German hostages three weeks ago.
Asistores believed that bandits “borrowed” their fighting courage from marijuana
leaves which they believed to smoke before the clash. Soldiers recovered
marijuana at encounter site. “They are drug-crazed fighters,”
