Philippine Government Negotiating with Imaginary People

Controversy on Aliases creates an after effect on the peace process. This was believed by most senators.

Two senators warned that the admittance of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front peace negotiator Mohagher Iqbal that his name was just an alias have unpleasant implications, predominantly on the peace negotiations between the rebel group and government.

“We need to find out the implications of this. Also, the reason why he used a pseudonym,” this was said by Senator Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the chairman of Senate committee on the local government which was reviewing Bangsamoro Basic Law.

The use of alias by MILF chief peace negotiator creates an impact on the documents that has been signed by the government with the peace agreement.

“The government should not be talking to an unknown personality,” said by acting minority leader Vicente Sotto III.

The chief negotiator should answer why he needed an alias instead of using his real name. Government peace panel should also make it clear if they were aware from the very start of the negotiation that Iqbal was just using an assumed name.

Senate committee invited Iqbal but his attendance was not yet confirmed. Chief negotiators presence should be encouraged answering all the questions the senators had in mind.
