Philippine environmental watchdog
again warned the public in buying products (specifically whitening products)
from China, Taiwan and Japan in which they contains high amounts of mercury in
which this products are being sold on small retails shops around Quezon City
and Manila City.
Among the 12 products tested by
the Eco Waste Coalition, Nine of them has mercury and banned by the FDA in
which no accreditation will be issued by the government agency.
According the Coalition,
cosmetics with mercury contents will stop the melanin production (a natural
component of the skin that will give a skin color) in which this will result to
a fairer facial appearance.
As consumer “we should be meticulous on unreliable
claims to some cosmetics products that promises a lighter and flawless skin
stone in which this products has undisclosed mercury amount.” This
content can damage not just the skin but this includes the kidneys.
Most whitening products that has
high level of mercury up to 51 million parts are those which are “made
in China sold on Chinese drugstores” at Php8 to Php200.
According to World Health
Organization skin products with high content of mercury may cause, discoloration,
skin rashes and reduction to fungal and bacterial infections.
