The army chief of Japan made a
two—day visit to Philippines to improve the military cooperation between two
countries in the rising tension in South China Sea.
Lieutenant General Iriberri of the
Commanding General of Philippine Army welcomed Chief of Staff General Kiyofumi
Iwata, of the Japanese Ground Self Defense Force, who has recently arrived.
Philippine Army spokesman Lieutenant
Colonel Detoyato, said that both officials discussed relationship between Philippine
Army and Japanese Self Defense Force and looked for ways how to improve cooperation.
“Discussed during the recent visit were the measures how to improve existing
relationship between Japan Army and Philippine Army,” General Detoyato
said.
“The end goal is to strengthening defense
cooperation between Japan and Philippines,” he added.
Iwata visited Philippine Army’s
Special Forces Command in Fort Magsaysay and he witnessed demonstration of Light
Reaction Regiment, Philippine Army’s elite unit.
Detoyato added Iwata and other members
of his staff visited the 51st Engineer Brigade Headquarters in Camp General
Atienza, Libis, Quezon City wherein the members of the unit conducted
Humanitarian and Disaster Response capability demonstrations.
