Philippines put on display dozens
of ancient maps in which officials said showed that China's territorial claims
over South China Sea did not take account of the disputed shoal at the center
of an spiteful standoff.
Philippines are in argument with
China over parts of South China Sea, these includes Scarborough Shoal, area
believed to be rich in oil, natural gas and fisheries resources.
China seized control shoal in 2012
and prevented Philippine fishermen getting close to a rich fishing ground.
The Philippine officials said that
the exhibition of old maps showed that for almost 1,000 years since from Song Dynasty in year 960 until the
end of Qing Dynasty in 20th century, China's southernmost territory was always
Hainan island, just of Chinese coast.
“We should respect historical
facts, not historical lies,” Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonio
Carpio said, who have done extensive research on territorial disputes.
