A pair unit of FA—50 fighter jets
will be added to Philippine military fleet by next year, President Aquino III
announced it officially as the country aims to secure its territory.
Aquino said that the two of the 12
FA—50 multi—purpose fighter jets will be delivered by their South Korean
manufacturer as early as next year next year, the rest of the units are
expected to follow in the next three years. Philippines has scrambled to
modernize its military, one of the Asia's weakest, amid increasingly tense
territorial disputes with the Chinese in South China Sea.
Aquino said that the Philippines had
no fighter jets for territorial defense since a fleet of F—5 jets were
decommissioned last 2005. The anemic air force is being strengthened with the
purchase of new assault helicopters, long—range patrol aircraft, and C130 cargo
planes.
