“Religion can in no way be used as
an excuse for violence,” Pope Francis warned during his visit to
Albania, an apparent indication to the violence wreaked by the Islamic State
militants.
The 77—year—old pontiff said that
majority—Muslim Albania was an “inspiring example” of a religious
harmony, as hundreds and thousands thronged the streets of the capital Tirana
to greet him.
“No one must use the name of God
to commit violence,” “To kill in the name of God is a grave
sacrilege. To discriminate in the name of God is inhuman.”
In an earlier dialogue to the government
officials, he praised the passive coexistence of the Albania’s Catholics,
Orthodox Christians, and Muslims, labeling it as “a precious gift to the country.”
“Let no one consider themselves to
be the ‘armor’ of God while planning and carrying out acts of violence and
oppression,”
