BMP—1 is an amphibious Soviet tracked
infantry fighting vehicle. The BMP (Boyevaya Mashina Pekhoty 1) meaning "infantry
fighting vehicle", BMP—1 was first mass-produced IFV (infantry
fighting vehicle) of the USSR.
It was called M—1967 and BMP—76PB
by the NATO before its final designation known.
The military leadership of Soviet
saw future wars as being conducted with chemical, biological and nuclear
weapons. A new design which combines the properties of APC (armored personnel
carrier) and light tank like BMP, it would allow infantry to function from relative
safety of its armored, radiation—shielded interior in contaminated areas to
fight alongside it uncontaminated areas.
The BMP—1 was tested in combat in
Yom Kippur War of 1973, it was used by Syrian and Egyptian forces. Based from
this conflict, early experiences in the War in Afghanistan, BMP-2 was the developed
and was accepted to service in 1980 of August.
In 1987, the BMP—3, radically
redesigned vehicle with complete new weapon system, entered service in limited
numbers with Soviet Army.
