Vietnam’s acquisition of United States made weapon downplays China

Vietnam wants to buy weapons developed and made in the United States and the regional powerhouse of China should not be alarmed.

As the relations between United States and Vietnam cools down, United States is now moving closer lifting its ban on the lethal arms exports applied after the communist victory in Vietnam War.

The Deputy Prime Minister in Vietnam Pham Binh Minh said that it's been 20 years since Washington and Hanoi normalized its relations, and it's "abnormal" to retain the ban.

"If we do not buy weapons from United States, we still buy from other countries," Minh said. "Why should China bother about that?"

Despite from the fraternal ties between Vietnam and China, the tensions spiked this year after China deployed deep—sea oil rig near disputed Paracel islands. The vessels from two sides repeatedly rammed each other near the rig and the standoff triggered deadly anti—China protests and riots in Vietnam.
