China taken out 160,000 on the “phantom”
government staff off on its official payroll who are receiving salaries despite
of not doing work in the government, a total of 162,629 officials who were receiving
government salaries without working now have been removed in its nationwide
campaign.
Province of Hebei northern China
saw the largest number of officials this was according to reports, with nearly
56,000 identified.
The Chinese President Xi Jinping launched
high—profile campaign against rampant corruption and misuse of the government
funds, in face of the widespread public anger.
The critics say that the campaign
has been hampered by lack of fundamental reforms, such as creation of independent
legal system.
“The problem of government staff
receiving salaries without working has been one of the problems most keenly
reported by cadres.”
China’s official Xinhua news
agency called the sacked workers “phantom officials,” these phantom
officials have been found in commercial hub of Shanghai and Tibet.
