Pipinos, the first submarine that was constructed in Greece

Pipinos as the first submarine constructed in Greece, was recently launched in Skaramangas shipyard of western Athens.

The christening ceremony of Pipinos attended by Greek Prime Minister Samaras, Deputy Prime Minister Venizelos, Defense Minister Avramopoulos, Shipping Minister Varvitsiotis, Chairman of Greek Parliament Meimarakis, Minister of Public Order Kikilias, Deputy Minister of National Defense Gennimata and the Archbishop Ieronymos.


Samaras used the said occasion to exhibit the efforts of government to continue to have the will and power to safely lead the country into post—crisis era.

Pipinos submarine Type 214 diesel-electric vessel, the first of the three submarines commissioned by Greek Navy to be built in Abu Dhabi—controlled Hellenic Shipyards.

The said Greek submarine named after Andreas Pipinos, a famous seaman from island of Hydra. During Greek War of Independence, Pipinos fought the side of Constantine Kanaris.

The Pipinos is 65.30 meters long and 7.90 meters wide. Maximum submerged speed reaches 21 knots and its Maximum surface speed is 10 knots.
