South Korean coastguard shot and even
killed Chinese person in charge of the fishing boat in a recent confrontation
in Yellow Sea, triggering angry protest from Beijing.
The coastguard spokesman said that
shots were fired as the said vessel boarded for illegally fishing the
territorial waters South Korea, around 130 kilometres off Western Island of the
Wangdeung.
"Dozens of Chinese sailors have attacked
our officers with their knives and bottles," this statement was said
by Choi Chang-Sam, the chief of Mokpo Coastguard Station.
"It was a dangerous situation. One
of our officer already fired warning shot but they did not stop. So he fired
several more rounds," Choi added, adding that five coastguard
officers needed treatment for injuries.
The said Chinese captain was then
taken to hospital in Mokpo on mainland where he was declared dead on arrival. The
emergency room staffer of the hospital told our sources that the X—rays shown a
bullet lodged in his chest.
"His lungs were full of blood",
The foreign ministry of China
reacted angrily to the recent incident and urged an immediate action.
"We are deeply shocked and
strongly dissatisfied with this violent law enforcement activity,"
Hong Lei the ministry spokesman told the reporters.
"We urge (South Korea) to
immediately investigate this case, bring those accountable to justice, and
inform China of the result of the investigation in a timely fashion,"
he added.
South Korean foreign ministries
sent condolences to the dead man’s relatives but insist and argued on the root
cause of recent accident was illegal fishing by the Chinese vessels.
"We would like to make it clear
that... the accident took place... as Chinese fishermen reacted with violence
to our coastguard's legitimate enforcement of laws (regarding) illegal fishing,"
it said in a statement.
In the year 2011, coastguard
officer was stabbed to death in struggle with the Chinese sailors.
