By Iraq’s request, Washington
began its offensive airstrikes in Tikrit in order to retake the city from ISIS
(Islamic State fighters). The recent US bombing marked a huge significant
expansion of U.S. military role in Iraq.
US offensive strikes were intended
for one mission, which was to destroy ISIS strongholds, saving the innocent
lives in Iraq.
James L. Terry, commander of U.S led
campaign to defeat ISIS group, said in a written statement. That “US attack will
further enable Iraqi forces under Iraqi command to maneuver and soon defeat
ISIL in Tikrit vicinity."
A press correspondent assigned in
Tikrit reported hearing warplanes late Wednesday, then afterwards followed by
multiple hard explosions. Iraqi commander in city told AP that warehouse used by
Islamic State to store weapons was bombed by U.S. plane, and afterwards U.S.
official confirmed that arms warehouses were among the main targets.
